Alert: Potential for Coastal Inundation in Jakarta Until May 21

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has issued an early warning regarding potential coastal flooding (tidal floods), projected to occur from May 14 to May 21, 2026.

The 112 emergency hotline is also available free of charge

This alert follows a report from the Tanjung Priok Class I Maritime Meteorological Station (BMKG) concerning a maximum sea level rise coinciding with the Super New Moon phenomenon (the alignment of the New Moon phase and Perigee).

Jakarta BPBD Head, Isnawa Adji stated that this celestial phenomenon could trigger a significant increase in sea levels across the northern coastal areas of Jakarta.

BPBD Warns of Potential Extreme Weather

"Coastal communities must bolster their preparedness, as high-tide conditions may persist for several consecutive days. It is also imperative to ensure that local drainage systems are functioning optimally to mitigate the risk of waterlogging," he expressed, Monday (5/18).

The peak of the maximum high tide is estimated to occur between 8 PM and 1 AM, with several areas identified as potentially vulnerable. These regions include Kamal Muara, Kapuk Muara, Penjaringan, Pluit, Ancol, Kamal, Marunda, Cilincing, Kalibaru, Muara Angke, Tanjung Priok, and Seribu Islands.

BPBD urges residents to remain vigilant regarding weather fluctuations and the rapidly changing maritime dynamics. Further, the public is advised to refrain from activities in coastal areas at high risk of tidal flooding, particularly during peak hours.

Residents are also encouraged to monitor official updates through the government’s digital platforms, such as the Tidal Wave Early Warning page at bpbd.jakarta.go.id/gelombanglaut, JAKI application for reporting inundation, and the pantaubanjir.jakarta.go.id website for real-time condition updates.

"The 112 emergency hotline is also available free of charge to respond to urgent situations and public reports requiring immediate assistance," he concluded.
